Leaving residue should be a confirmed process decision rather than an assumption based only on the words \u201cno-clean\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"cleaning-before-conformal-coating\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cleaning Before Conformal Coating<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No-clean flux residue can interfere with coating wetting, adhesion and coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residue trapped around component leads or beneath low-clearance components may cause coating separation, bubbles or incomplete coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean and dry the PCBA before coating when required by the coating supplier, customer specification or validated production process. The cleaning chemistry must be compatible with the PCB materials, components, labels and coating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"high-impedance-and-high-voltage-circuits\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">High-Impedance and High-Voltage Circuits<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residue becomes more important on circuits with high impedance, small conductor spacing or elevated operating voltage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moisture and ionic contamination can reduce surface insulation resistance or contribute to leakage and electrochemical migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These assemblies may require cleaning and measurable cleanliness testing even when no-clean flux is used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"harsh-operating-environments\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Harsh Operating Environments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PCBAs used in humid, polluted or temperature-cycling environments may require tighter contamination control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automotive, industrial, telecommunications, aerospace and medical electronics can have different reliability and cleanliness requirements. The product specification\u2014not the industry name alone\u2014should determine whether cleaning is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"visible-flux-residue\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visible Flux Residue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visible residue may be unacceptable even when it does not cause an electrical failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Customers may require a clean surface for appearance, inspection, marking, bonding or coating. Ionic contamination requires a defined test method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A visually clean PCBA may still contain ionic contamination. A board with visible residue may still pass a particular electrical-cleanliness requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Define the required result before choosing the cleaning equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"how-is-no-clean-flux-removed\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is No-Clean Flux Removed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cleaning method depends on the flux, residue condition, board design and required cleanliness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The process may use a compatible water-based cleaning agent, solvent cleaning, brush cleaning or another validated method.
