Visible rosin flux residue remained around components, solder joints and across the PCB surface after soldering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The condition did not meet the end customer\u2019s delivery requirements. The manufacturer therefore needed a controlled process that could remove the residue from the assembled boards without relying on manual wiping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DEZ evaluated the customer\u2019s actual PCBAs and completed the cleaning test using the DEZ-C743 offline batch cleaning process. Additional residue could be seen between nearby components and around soldered areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the PCBAs had completed assembly, their surface condition did not meet the end customer\u2019s acceptance requirements. The residue remaining after soldering must be evaluated according to the flux chemistry, assembly design and product requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visible residue can affect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Final appearance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visual inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conformal-coating preparation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Customer acceptance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long-term product reliability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all flux residue produces the same risk. However, depending on its chemical composition, moisture exposure and electrical conditions, soluble contamination may contribute to electrical leakage, corrosion or electrochemical migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For assemblies operating in humid, high-voltage or long-service-life environments, uncontrolled contamination may increase the possibility of insulation degradation or electrical shorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is particularly relevant to automotive electronics, aerospace and defence equipment, new-energy systems, medical electronics and industrial controls. This allowed DEZ to evaluate the contamination and board construction before establishing the cleaning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evaluation considered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>PCBA dimensions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum component height<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Location of the residue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Component density<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Areas with restricted liquid access<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flux and cleaning-agent compatibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Basket loading orientation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Washing and rinsing requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drying conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Required acceptance result<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Testing the actual assembly is important because cleaning performance depends on more than the machine model. Spray positions above, between and below the loading levels directed heated cleaning liquid towards the assemblies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cleaning chemistry dissolved and separated compatible rosin flux residue from component surfaces, solder joints and the PCB solder mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"di-water-rinsing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">DI-Water Rinsing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After washing, DI water rinsed away dissolved contamination and remaining cleaning-agent residue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rinse stage is necessary because washing alone can leave dissolved flux or cleaning chemistry on the assembly. DI water is used for rinsing; it does not replace the main cleaning chemistry when the flux is not water-soluble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"hot-air-drying\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hot-Air Drying<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cleaned PCBAs remained inside the chamber for hot-air drying. There was no need to transfer wet boards between separate washing, rinsing and drying stations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"cleaning-test-results\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cleaning Test Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The customer sample test achieved the main visual objective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Large visible rosin deposits were removed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Component surfaces appeared cleaner<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residue around component leads was significantly reduced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The PCB solder-mask surface showed a clear visual improvement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Washing, rinsing and drying were completed in one machine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple PCBAs could be processed in the same batch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The result provided a basis for establishing a production-cleaning process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test results apply to the submitted PCBAs, contamination, cleaning chemistry and process settings. When cleaning is required by the product specification, it helps prepare the assembly for inspection, electrical testing, conformal coating or final delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For automotive electronics, aerospace and defence equipment, new-energy systems and other reliability-focused products, the cleaning requirement should be defined before mass production.
